Body image issues? Here’s how period panties can help

Body image issues? Here’s how period panties can help

Body image isn’t constant — it shifts with our moods, surroundings, and yes, our menstrual cycle. During menstruation, many people feel bloated, sluggish, or simply “off” in their bodies. These changes are natural, but they can affect how confident we feel in our clothes and in ourselves. The good news? Small choices, like the period underwear you wear, can have a big impact on both comfort and self-perception.

Why Body Image Wobbles Around Your Period  🔄

When menstruation rolls around, it's totally normal to feel "off" in your body image — and there’s good science explaining why.

First, hormone fluctuations, especially in estrogen and progesterone, can lead to fluid retention and bloating. In one study, over 65% of women surveyed noted edema during the luteal phase (the days just before menstruation) due to sodium and water retention triggered by progesterone’s effects on blood vessel permeability and fluid balance.

Beyond physical changes, research shows that body dissatisfaction tends to rise during the premenstrual and menstrual phases. Studies have found that women reported significantly more negative body-related thoughts and anxiety during the perimenstrual phase compared to other phases of their cycle. This aligns with findings that hormonal shifts — which alter neurotransmitter activity — can affect mood, cognition, and self-perception

So if you're noticing bloating, fatigue, or body dissatisfaction right before or during your period, you’re not imagining it — it’s a real, biological response. What’s important is remembering that these feelings don’t define you.

How the Right Underwear Can Boost Your Confidence ✅

Period underwear is no longer just functional — it’s stylish and comfortable. Modern leak-proof underwear for women uses breathable fabrics, flattering cuts, and absorbent layers that feel nothing like the bulky, “nappy-like” options of the past.

When you’re wearing underwear that fits well and looks good, you’re less likely to feel restricted or self-conscious, even on heavy-flow days. Instead of focusing on leaks or discomfort, you can move freely and feel supported — both physically and mentally.

That is why we asked the team what they wear to feel both protected and confident during their period.

  • Emma: Detachable String Bikini
Why? “This specific silhouette doesn’t dig in, and I feel protected without feeling constrained, even when I’m bloated. I can also change it in public without fully undressing by swapping it with another detachable string bikini.”
  • Aleks: Feel Nothing Bikini
Why? “It’s seamless. I want to be able to wear skinny leggings, shorts, or a dress during my period and feel exactly the same as I do the rest of the time. No nappy feel. That’s what I expect from seamless period underwear — to make me forget I’m on my period!”
  • Victoria: Go With the Flow Bikini
Why? “It’s just so comfy, and I love the design. I’d pair it with my favourite joggers or baggy jeans and let the waistband peek out a little — period or not.”

These aren’t just products; they’re tools to help you feel in control and comfortable during your cycle. The right pair can make a real difference to your body image by helping you feel prepared, supported, and stylish.

Don’t be so hard on yourself ❤️🩹

Body image naturally fluctuates, and your period might be one of those times when you feel more self-critical. Try to remind yourself that these changes are temporary and part of a healthy, functioning body. Choosing underwear that supports your needs — whether that’s extra protection, breathability, or a cut that makes you feel confident — is one way to counter those insecurities and we are here to help you shine!
